Has someone ever said this to you: "So-and-so is perfectly sane in every way. There's just that one thing about which she is absolutely crazy." I'm thinking, doesn't that one way in which that person is absolutely crazy make them a little less sane all around? Also, if one pays close enough attention one might begin to see that some of that "circumstantial lunacy" has reared its head before -- and most likely in several different instances of similar situations. Lest you think I'm being judgmental or even hypocritical, for the record I'm speaking as a multifaceted mentally special person whose own brand of crazy knows little to no bounds.

I was recently asked to be a stand-in of sorts for a friend's very personal documentary about suicide. On the first day of shooting my friend was to be interviewed by his therapist about the impact of the death of his older sister. The therapist canceled at the last minute and somehow I was asked to fill in the night before.

"I know it's intense, but I really need you to do this," my friend said.

"Yes. Of course," I said. "I mean, if you think it's something I'm capable of doing."

"Absolutely. It just needs to be a conversation, and basically, I just need you to help me connect."

As you may know I'm not a doctor. Despite that minor detail I said I would do it, and I did, and I think it went okay. But let me just state for the record that you have no idea how badly I wanted to arrive at the shoot dressed as Sigmund Freud.
